SUNDAY LOVE. #19. ARNIE THE MINIATURE DACHSHOUND.

Now don't be fouled by those eyes folks, having a sausage dog is no walk in the park. I have been following Becky from Milk Bubble Tea Bloglittle adventures with Oscar, her miniature dachshund, since she first got the little rascal and with Arnie only being a year or so older, we have shared their little ways over twitter, showing that they are so alike. I say sausage play date needs to happen. Anyway, back to the post, I was really inspired by her recent post sharing the 'Things you should probably know about Miniature Dachshund' and I thought I would have a go at sharing the truth behind the cuteness and what he is like as a pet. Most things are pretty similar, as sausages seem to have the same instincts and cute ways but I thought I'd write a few more. Of course there will be cute pictures too. Also just to add before it gets confusing, Arnie actually belongs to my sister and her late boyfriend but now Arnie lives with Jess and I (and John and his friend, sometimes Mum and Dad too) in our rented house. He feels like my sausage too of course and I love him like he is my own. Bring on the sausage love triangle!

*Arnie can't be alone. This mainly surrounds Jess, his mummy. He literally follows her everywhere. It's cute and all, but sometimes you need some privacy and well that doesn't really happen with Arnie. This picture I took, when Jess was showering. Yes Arnie was watching her shower. Maybe seem creepy, extremely cute but Arnie it's just inappropriate!

*Training Arnie is tough. Getting him potty trained has been a nightmare but finally he is slowly getting it and really it's not his fault. Arnie has been forever switching houses and hands that  the poor little fella got a bit lost in his training. If Arnie does have slip ups and he does, we just tell him off and send him to his bed. The nastiest thing however, that we have learnt is that if he poos inside, sometimes he eats it! Yes he eats it, if you don't catch him doing it straight away to swiftly flush it. Whether this is to hide it and save him getting a telling off or it just tastes good haha (vom!)  it happens and its gross!

*Arnie does bark. I think it's pretty normal for small dogs to bark and it was something that still annoys all of us, as we used to have a choco lab who was as silent as anything. Usually it's things like the door going or someone new coming into the house but we have been on a mission to try and get him to stop. As he comes to work with us everyday, lots of people are in and out, which the barking just gets too much. Thanks to one of our colleagues, we have now discovered a simple way of getting him to stop instantly and now he is starting to bark less and less. If your interested in this easy technique drop me a message or email and I'll share all. I think it's not always the nicest welcome into a house with a barking dog as it doesn't intimidate people and can seem aggressive, even though we know he is just protecting us.

* Arnie loves the sun. I think this goes for most dogs that for some reason just love sitting in the sun. They get all cosy and warm, usually whilst sleeping. Arnie as he is only small, will move to any little tiny bit of sunlight and plot up for the day. We have found him on the sofa, near thew window, on Jess' bed, on my bed literally anywhere near a window. Clever pup I say. If the sun is hot, make sure they have lots of water as sausages do get dehydrated pretty quick. You can usually tell by their skin.

*Arnie knows the power of the puppy eyes. These eyes sometimes are just too much, they trap you in and whatever Arnie wants you usually give in. Arnie since he was around a year old, started begging for food. Usually he jumps up your leg or just stares you down with one paw off the ground - such a cute pose, especially as I can never get away from those big lion paws. We try our best to not give in but this is usually impossible, especially for our Dad, who feeds him everything even chocolate!

*Arnie loves his toys. A dog and his bone, literally is a match made in heaven. If you need some peace and quiet, just give the sausage a bone. Arnie is a power chewer, so usually gets through a bone in a day or so, but if your lucky he may just get attached to it. Arnie had one bone for over 5months at our parents house. Every time he went there to visit, he would run off and go and find it. He would normally hide it in the bed or under the washing but he would never forget where he left it. Without fail, before we left he would go and hide it for next time. I was actually gutted when he finally ate it all!

* Arnie's instinct to dig and bury. This has got to be one of the cutest things that Arnie does. If he gets a new bone, he loves to bury it under the covers or blanket. He doesn't use his paws to bury, he used his nose to rub and push the blankets over the bone. Of course, we can all see the bone most times, but to Arnie if you pull the bone out he always gives you the look like 'how did you know its there!' So cute! With the digging, Arnie randomly starts digging on the floor, the bed, anywhere. He usually does this when he is playing or trying to clean his face. Either way it's so funny to watch as he propa goes to town!

* Arnie takes alot of work. It seems to be well known that Sausage dogs are serious lap dogs. If you are sitting down, without fail Arnie will attempt to come and sit on your lap with you. If you ignore him, he actually pushes your arm with his nose to let himself in. It's all worth it for the huggles though. Unlike any dog we have had before, Arnie has to sleep in the bed with you. He is your very own hot water bottle! But we wouldn't change it for the world. He is our best friend, other half and the best pet we could have ever asked for.

If you do have any questions or your thinking about getting a mini dachshund please do email, tweet or leave me a comment below. I am happy to help. Of course I am no expert but we have learnt alot and it's sometimes nice to get some support from a fellow dachshund lover. Hope you liked this post, I liked sharing something a bit different with you.
